Description	Conceived in 1953, the college's system of tunnels met an immediate need to provide heat to Warde Hall (the original building), the convent, and the new dormitory (McAuley Hall), all by means of pipes housed underground, affording connections between buildings. Construction began in July, 1954, involving new boilers, oil tanks, tree removal, and sidewalk additions. The lighted tunnels experienced a transformation when an art major decided to paint a portion of the interior; the tradition of placing artwork in the tunnels remains. Paths were later extended to all campus buildings as construction continued for Regina, the Donnelly Center, Lundy Commons, Hennessey Recreation Center, and Basile Hall. The tunnels was once used a civil defense bomb shelter and is known as the longest, underground passage in Cedar Rapids.
