Conceived
in
1953
, the
college's
system
of
tunnels
met
an
immediate
need
to
provide
heat
to
Warde
Hall
(the
original
building)
, the
convent
, and the
new
dormitory
(McAuley
Hall)
,
all
by
means
of
pipes
housed
underground
,
affording
connections
between
buildings
.
Construction
began
in
July
,
1954
,
involving
new
boilers
,
oil
tanks
,
tree
removal
, and
sidewalk
additions
. The
lighted
tunnels
experienced
a
transformation
when
an
art
major
decided
to
paint
a
portion
of the
interior
; the
tradition
of
placing
artwork
in the
tunnels
remains
.
Paths
were
later
extended
to
all
campus
buildings
as
construction
continued
for
Regina
, the
Donnelly
Center
,
Lundy
Commons
,
Hennessey
Recreation
Center
, and
Basile
Hall
. The
tunnels
was
once
used
a
civil
defense
bomb
shelter
and
is
known
as the
longest
,
underground
passage
in
Cedar
Rapids
.
