In
March
,
1955
, the
Sisters
of
Mercy
began
work
on a
new
,
college
dormitory
; the
cornerstone
laying
ceremony
followed
on
October
3
of that
year
. In
September
1956
,
McAuley
Hall
welcomed
college
students
into its
seven-story
structure
; the
first
floor
housed
the
college
switchboard
and
lobby
,
along
with
social
and
community
rooms
.
Second
through
fifth
floors
composed
the
dormitory
,
housing
100
students
.
Seventh
floor
offered
the
penthouse
and a
sun
deck
;
atop
the
building
is
the
Mercy
Cross
, a
symbol
originating
with
Catherine
McAuley
, the
foundress
of the
Sisters
of
Mercy
.
Pictured
in
front
of
McAuley
Hall
are
Mother
Superiors
Sister
Mary
Ildephonse
Holland
and
Sister
Mary
Agnes
Hennessey
.
Upon
the
opening
of
McAuley
Hall
, the
college's
original
building
was
renamed
"
Warde
Hall
" in
honor
of
Sister
Mary
Frances
Warde
, the
first
Sister
of
Mercy
to
come
to the
United
States
. The
entire
campus
and the
college
immediately
became
known
as "
Mount
Mercy.
"
